For this last observation, I went into the perk with the intention of witnessing the Sunday Night Football Event that was advertised above (advertisement taken from the Pace Perk Instagram page), thinking that it was going to be full of people who were watching the game and having a good time. However, when I walked in the television wasn’t even on. Interesting. There were a couple of large groups (I am the only one by myself), and I notice that people are still purchasing milkshakes despite it being freezing outside. One group has combined a set of 2 tables to all sit together, seemingly a group of sorority girls, all dressed in their fall sweaters and pea coats. Tonight, people here are staying in their own friend groups, playing cards, and being generally loud and having a good time. It appears to be mostly large groups when I first walk in, and it seems that people are mostly coming as a quick reprieve from studying, rather than on Thursday night where it was more of a main event. All of a sudden the room is empty but for one group of girls and me. This is around 10:00pm, and I suppose that this is when people are ready to go back to do their homework due tomorrow. They just came here for a quick coffee to get themselves ready to study.
Now the group of girls are getting ready to leave, but a couple are staying behind so I am not sitting in here entirely alone. A couple of people are walking in but they seem to be in and out, waiting for their orders to be ready and then quickly leaving. A second wave of people are coming in at 10:15, but not in as large of groups as before. They trickle in in twos and threes. It's far more quiet and people are on their phones as evidence of their immense boredom. Time is starting to crawl by as people don't speak at all. It almost seems as though people are not coming to socialize now at all, they are simply in desperate need of some coffee to get them through the homework that they have been putting off for the weekend. For once the music that's playing behind the counter can be heard throughout the entire place. The people behind the counter barely have to be loud in order to call attention to the numbers being called. It is still far busier than on Tuesday night, but not nearly to the level of Thursday.
A group of girls enter, seemingly all on the same sports team. They grab a table together and wait for their food. As I look around, I start to notice that the people who are sitting together are dressed in similar fashions, and thinking back on it, this seems to be true much of the time. The athletes are dressed in their athletic gear, some friends sitting together are dressed in their PJs and sweatpants, other groups of friends are dressed in their fall best. It is a very interesting concept that I am just truly realizing now, and will have to look further into this in the future.
