I walked into the Pace Perk at 11:30 on a Thursday Night and was shocked to see how many people I saw there. The room had music blasting and people laughing and talking rather loudly, a stark contrast to the mellow conversations that I had experienced last time (the video I have posted above is a song that was played that everyone loved, intended to provide an example of the type of music that was playing that night). This time, I brought my roommate along with me because I had not initially intended to observe the place, but once I walked in I was intrigued by what I saw and knew that I had to make this one of my observations.
We walk to the counter to order our food, and as we sit down I start to look around, seeing a lot of people who are all interacting with one another, jumping from table to table talking to new people. We have people coming up and talking to us, and my roommate starts up a game of SPIT with another girl, who she just met. People were not coming in for a quick snack as they had been previously, instead they were hanging out, relaxing after the long week, and talking to new people. It was incredibly loud tonight, with people who were playing games, and there was even a few people stopping to observe my roommate and her new friend, watching the intense game of SPIT that was arising (they both seemed to enjoy shouting smack-talk at each other while playing, which is seemingly what attracted people’s attention). There was a group in the corner playing truth-or-dare, the dares being mainly to go up to strangers and asking them questions (one girl had to go around the room and take a poll of everyone’s sexual orientation), and everybody was talking to each other, and having a good time.
Again, I noticed that there was a distinct lack of cell-phones being used here. It seemed that everybody was more engrossed in what was happening in the present than whatever was happening on social media at the moment. And I also started to notice that people seemed to be more open to talking to new people tonight. I'm not sure if it was the loud music playing, or if it was that a couple of people were doing it and others became inspired. I will have to look into this more.
